11/12 English: Reflecting on Reading Logs

Writing Warmup:
Dr. B was really impressed with the reading logs she received in class yesterday.  You were able to capture important details in a very short amount of time, showing me, your teacher, that you have excellent comprehension of the key plot points in Alan Moore's Watchmen.

For today, we will do a mini reading log exercise and reflect on our experiences on the blog.  Here are your instructions:

1) On a clean sheet of paper, set up a log like the one yesterday:

  • Date:
  • Time Started:
  • Time Ended (+ # of pages):
  • Response:To the best of your ability, summarize the plot on the pages you were able to get through.  Make sure to cite page numbers at key points so you can reference them in the future and during discussion.

2) When you have finished, describe your experience in the comments section below.  Answer these questions:

  • Do you feel like you understand the plot of Watchmen better when you have written it down immediately afterwards?
  • Looking at your time and page numbers, do you consider yourself a fast reader?
  • Lastly, what is one thing you want to know more about in the pages you read today?

  2. I feel like I can understand the plot better when I have written it down after, but some of the book is still hard to follow. If I need to look back to see what happened in that chapter, I can just look at my reading log.
I wouldn't consider myself a fast reader, but I think I read at a good pace to get it done in time, along with understanding it well.
I want to know what was happening in the beginning of chapter 11. I didn't understand it at all and the context was confusing.

  3. 1. Do you feel like you understand the plot of Watchmen better when you have written it down immediately afterwards?
-I feel that I understand the plot of Watchmen a little bit better once I have written it down, because as I go on through the chapter, it is easier to comprehend what is happening later on.

    2. Looking at your time and page numbers, do you consider yourself a fast reader?
-I think that I read at a good pace. Not too slow, and not too fast. I also think that sometimes I don't know what I am reading, but I keep going which isn't very good.

    3. Lastly, what is one thing you want to know more about in the pages you read today?
    - I want to know what all of the vocabulary that was in the chapter actually meant. I was really confused what was being said in the beginning because the vocabulary that was being used was very difficult to understand.

  9. 1- Do you feel like you understand the plot of Watchmen better when you have written it down immediately afterwards? I definitely think that I understand the plot when I think about what happened throughly. I have a hard time comprehending what is happening in the book at certain points, but once I either, talk it over with the class or watch the movie I feel as if I can understand what is happening better.

2- Looking at your time and page numbers, do you consider yourself a fast reader? Yes and no, I tend to get caught up on what is happening in the book and really think about it in depth. If I'm at an interesting spot in the story I tend to be a faster reader.

3- Lastly, what is one thing you want to know more about in the pages you read today? I want to be able to understand exactly what is happening. I understood that they were in a Antartica (cold climate) and Veidt was carefully watching Rorschach and Nite Owl.
