Instructor: Dr. Helana E. Brigman
Classroom: High School English Classroom (end of the High School Island wing)
REQUIRED TEXTS:
The MLA Handbook (8th edition).  Purchase books for $11.40 at Amazon, here.

COURSE DESCRIPTION/RATIONALE:

Freshman English introduces Vinalhaven students to the fundamentals of reading, writing, and critical thinking, skills that will serve them throughout all of their coursework on the island or beyond.  In semester one, we will read Bram Stoker's Dracula and use the Close Reading Interpretative Tool (CRIT) to learn about close reading.  Close reading equips students with the essential skills of literary analysis beginning with how to paraphrase a passage and identify its speaker and ending with an argumentative paragraph that puts forth an interpretation of what they have learned.  In semester two, we will focus on grammar, mechanics, and writing, building upon the skills learned in semester one.
