For today's socratic circle we will be breaking into two groups: the first will be our "fishbowl," leading a group discussion about the documentary Out of Print (2013); the second will be our audience, observing how discussion is going and if they agree/disagree with the conversation taking place in the middle.
Instructions:
Audience members: in the comments section of this post, make thoughtful observations about the conversation taking place in the "fishbowl." Good observations will do the following:
- Identify when you agree/disagree with observations and specifically state why (ASR: Apt Specific Reference).
- Observe what specific group members did that helped to "propel" conversation forward, respond to their group members, and provide thoughtful observations.
Fishbowl members: Students receiving a 3, "Meets," on Speaking and Listening 1, will do the following:
- Come to discussion prepared, having read and researched materials beforehand. SL1a
- Work with peers to promote a civil, democratic discussion, set clear goals, and establish individual roles. SL1b
- Propel conversations forward by posing and asking questions that probe reasoning and ask for evidence. SL1c
- Respond thoughtful to diverse perspectives, synthesize (combine) comments, claims, and evidence, resolve contradictions, and investigate meaning. SL1d
Cheyenne spoke. Outer circle is not supposed to speak. @cheyenne shh.
ReplyDeleteThere is too much talking over each other. Make sure to talk at your own time if you have a good comment.
ReplyDeleteNice job, Maxwell Stanley. You looked back to your notes to answer Andrew's question.
ReplyDeleteNot very organized
ReplyDeleteEveryone is laughing a lot.
ReplyDeleteKeon and Andrew need to stop laughing...
ReplyDeleteThey are talking all at once.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that Mr.Feezor was in 11/12 high school english class?
ReplyDeleteI own a record player.
ReplyDeleteFeez shouldn't be the only one talking he wasn't even in the class when we watched the video.
ReplyDeleteVery true. We watched the video for a reason (to take notes).
DeleteVery off topic.
ReplyDeleteKeon said, "you can still buy books though." Good observation Keon, because this creates great conversation about other options.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I think Keon definitely moved the conversation forward here.
DeleteAlso, Andrew did a good job getting the conversation back on track when it took a detour about records.
A little tense.
ReplyDeleteThey are getting very aggressive with each other.
ReplyDeleteKeon realized he was talking over Elijah, so he stopped. Good.
ReplyDeleteMax keeps checking his notes to bring up very good points!
ReplyDeleteNice job moving the conversation forward Max! I enjoyed how you brought up children's literacy to discuss the future of books.
ReplyDeleteStop laughing. Off topic
ReplyDeleteOff topic
ReplyDeletePregnant woman and rocking chairs?
ReplyDeleteYeah, I was thinking that this was a little off topic.
DeleteGood thought Andrew! "What if you lose that?"
ReplyDeleteGood connection Feez!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Feez brought up the importance of "instruction books" when buying furniture. This is a great example of how printed books matter.
ReplyDeleteAndrew did a great job picking up on this! He discussed how to fix a motor and needing a hard copy manual.
DeleteThere isn't much talk about the actual topic, but a lot of little points that can relate I guess.
ReplyDeleteGood question Max, I agree it shouldn't matter how people learn as long as they are getting the correct information.
ReplyDeleteI can't keep track on who is saying what, and what they are saying.
ReplyDeleteMe too. I think they are going off topic too much. A lot about boats.
DeleteThey are bringing up topics that they are into instead of talking about what is important right now.
DeleteWhy are phones being talked about?
ReplyDeleteBecause in the movie it talked a lot about the amount of time that people spend staring at screens.
DeleteMax thinks that it shouldn't matter if kids are learning online or in a book as long as they are learning. I agree, but too much technology in a kids life, can cause problems in the future.
ReplyDeleteI think Andrew made a good point about authority when using a printed manual. Max tied did a good job "incorporating the statements of others" when he summarized Andrew's comments ("hard copy book's credibility").
ReplyDelete"Every book has credibility but the internet doesn't."
ReplyDeleteNice point Max. I agree that books have credibility but a lot of things on the internet don't.
ReplyDeleteElijah did a good job of keeping the conversation going.
ReplyDeleteElijah is doing a good job keeping the conversation going.
ReplyDeleteGreat question Elijah about buying books online rather than at a library. Make sure to fully ask the question so everyone in your circle will understand fully.
ReplyDeleteGreat question Elijah about the Google Books lawsuit. It propelled the conversation forward well!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Andrew, books are definitely being pushed away but they still have lots of publicity.
ReplyDeleteVery good point Max
ReplyDeleteAwesome addition to the conversation Andrew. Back in 2012, technology wasn't as popular because they didn't have the new and improved iPhone, and all of the high-tech devices.
ReplyDeleteI feel like having all the boys together is making the circle better. It seems like they are really comfortable talking to each other.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree
DeleteI agree. It seems like they can relate more.
DeleteYes! I agree. Everyone is getting all of the information out as they please. They are talking over each other though.
DeleteI know I felt a lot better talking with just the guy it seems easier, and not so awkward.
DeleteExcellent starting question Amber! I think a simple question like, "What is the movie Out of Print about?" is a wonderful way to set the stage for your socratic circle.
ReplyDeleteIs it really a bad thing tho that kids are learning to read on I pads and things like that maybe some kids just can't learn from books like others can, and i pads help.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point Paige said, for me I only have like 4 books in my house.
ReplyDeleteI agree she then went on to say that she still has books from when she was 12 because she use to like to read but not anymore.
DeleteI like how Amber mentioned how parents don't read to there children anymore and Cheyenne compared her childhood saying that her parents read to her every night.
ReplyDeleteAmber: great point about the reason why tablets are more useful than books! I like that you pointed out quantity and portability.
ReplyDeleteCheyenne - Great comment about how our library habits are changing.
ReplyDeleteI agree that libraries still have some importance but I feel like the online libraries will have a rent feature to just buy a book until you read it.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe that library have not started to do that yet. It would make taking books from a library so much easier.
DeleteAshlyn had a good response to the question "why do you think kids arent into books much anymore?" Ashlyn replied "I think its because kids now a days are starting at a young age and growing up with all this technology".
ReplyDeleteOn ur phone for 6 hours a day!!!
ReplyDelete"!!!"
Delete😱
DeleteAmber and Paige made good points adding onto the conversation with statistics and facts.
ReplyDeleteThats a very good point cheyanne most authors that are just starting and are trying to make a name for them self selling there books online makes it so much easier.
ReplyDeleteAmber said how her grandfather does not know how to use a phone bc he did not grow up with them but that kids now a days are not gonna know how to use books
ReplyDeleteI don't even think I remember the last time I went to the library to go and check out a book.
ReplyDeleteI'm really glad Paige brought up the Mark Twain quote, "people who won't read have no advantage over people who can't read."
ReplyDeletePaige made a good point with bringing statements and quotes that were discussed in class into the socratic circle.
