AP English: Think - Puzzle - Know—Writing about Poetry

I chose this picture for today because it reminded me of our discussion about Walt Whitman's "I Sing the Body Electric."

For today, I wanted to finish our discussion on Writing about Poetry from Tuesday's class.  Before we do, please answer the questions below.

1) What do you think you know about writing about poetry?
2) What puzzles (confuses) you about writing about poetry?
3) What do you want to know more about writing about poetry?

  1. 1. I think I know about carefully reading the poem to make sure i have a good understanding before i begin to write. I also know how to infer the implied meanings behind words.

    2. I still have a hard time understanding the forms of poems sometimes, although i can identify the basics.

    3. I would like to know more about forms of poems and how they can affect the meaning of a poem.

    1. I really like your second and third responses Tyson! Understanding how *form* influences *meaning* is an essential skill for writing and thinking about poetry. If you're having trouble with this, I would focus on learning forms you will always return to (i.e., English sonnet) and focus on breaks in the form (i.e., heroic couplet at the end or end of the first quatrain). Then, think about how that break indicates a shift in the speaker's meaning.

  2. 1. I think that poetry is always a huge challenge to write.
    2. It confuses me how people manage to make t flow so well, and how they make their poetry rhyme or find the perfect poetic device to fit in with their work.
    3. I would like to know how people come up with metaphors that relate to other metaphors in their work, or imagery relating to other imagery, etc. I also want to know how some poets can write long pieces about one specific topic that one could easily explain in just a few sentences.

  3. 1. I think writing about poetry is a way to express yourself and show what you thought of the poem. I think this type of writing can be different for everyone because people might not think the poem has the same meaning as each other.

    2. It is hard for me to figure out what a poem means a lot of the time which makes it difficult for me to write about it.

    3. I want to learn more about how to figure out a poems meaning and understand what a poem is trying to say.

  4. 1) What do you think you know about writing about poetry?
Poetry often tells a story, or it could not. Poetry could be beautiful, or it could be pointless. Often times more than not, poetry will have multiple interpretations, and take close analysis reading in order to interpret it correctly. Writing in poetry has many literary terms depending on the form of poem. Also, poems are often broken into stanzas and/or separate lines.

    2) What puzzles (confuses) you about writing about poetry?
I still don't fully understand iambic pentameter. I understand how to find stressed and unstressed syllables, but sometimes I feel like an important word is stressed, then the next word such as the or an is stressed.

    3) What do you want to know more about writing about poetry?
I want to learn more about poetry that rhymes, and free verse. These poems often feel more fun to read and speak to me more than one that I would have to closely analyze.

  5. 1. I think writing poetry is using different forms and devices to express one's feelings, but I also I don't really think I would know how to do that.
    2. It puzzles me because I don't know how poets come up with poems that flow and can even have different meanings to make the reader think.
    3. I guess I would want to know where some writers get their inspiration to write from, and how they put such depth in them while also remembering to use poetic devices, but not in a too obvious of way.

  6. 1) I know that every poem is different; in structure, form and meaning.
    2) I find it confusing on the structure and layout on some poems. Why are some shaped the way they are?
    3) I want to know where poetry came from and how it originated.

  8. 1) What do you think you know about writing about poetry?
I think I mostly know how to write free verse and as a kid I remember learning about the different types of poems, such as haiku's, couplets and so on.

    2) What puzzles (confuses) you about writing about poetry?
I like this about poetry but it can also be harder at times to write about something with no boundaries. In my opinion poetry isn't about being in the perfect format or grammar but sending some sort of message in a creative way. Because of this sometimes it is hard to make it flow because in most cases you can't just do some research to figure out what your next sentence should be.

    3) What do you want to know more about writing about poetry
I want to learn how to write what looks like a simple poem with simple words but have them lead to way deeper meanings so I can be a better writer but also so I can understand other poems.

  9. 1) I don't really write poetry myself, but in class we have learned about the different structures, and different types of poems that people write. We have also spent a lot of time on the devices used in poetry. Poetry is a way for one to express themselves, and to tell a story, or even a lesson.
    2) Writing a poem with iambic pentameter still kinda confuses me, but not all poems have to follow this.
    3) I would like to learn more about the structures and different types of poetry, especially blank and free verse.

  11. 1) What do you think you know about writing about poetry?
There are certain ways to emphasize meaning of the poem and there are no rules involved to create the structure. There are different kinds of poetry depending on the era and cultural background, so that really impacts the meaning of the poem because it is written due to certain beliefs.

    2) What puzzles (confuses) you about writing about poetry?
Not a lot entirely puzzles me about poetry. It's mostly the analytical part of it because somebody else thinking process may not be the same as mine. I know that no rules are involved for the structure of the poem, and that's what makes it more confusing.

    3) What do you want to know more about writing about poetry?
I would like to know more about different cultures involved with poetry and be able to analyze different thinking.

  12. 1) I think I need more practice analyzing the meaning of poetry.
    2) I am confused when reading poems from a long time ago because of the old words we do not use a whole lot today.
    3) Continuing to learn about poetry measurement (foot, meter, etc.) and more tips for analyzing poems.

3)I want to know more about how to write it myself and how to quickly identify and know what the poem is about.
