Writing Warmup:
In yesterday's class, you took the Self-Assessment on Skills and Aptitudes (pg. 380, Technical Communication). Based on your answers to the assessment's questions, please answer the questions below.
1) What did you discover about yourself as an applicant?
2) Based on your answers, what are your biggest strengths and weaknesses?3) What jobs/fields do you think you would be best suited for?
1. I discovered that I have not had that many experiences in high pressure situations but I feel I would do ok in them.
ReplyDelete2. One of my biggest strengths is how I can work well with people to get things done. One of my biggest weaknesses is not having a lot of experience out in the world.
3. I feel I could do well in the medical field. Also I could do well working with animals. I could possibly do well in a government job also.
These are some great answers Corey! I agree that you work well with others, and I think you could put things like, "team player" and "works well as part of a team" in your application materials.
DeleteSince you work well as part of a team/group, what kinds of jobs (in medicine, government, or with animals) do you think would fit you?
I liked how you said one of your greatest strengths is working well with other people. I enjoy working with other people because it gives me new ideas, but I prefer to work independently.
DeleteI agree with you on your strengths because I work better in groups because everyone is different so no one will think the same thing. This means everyone would have a different intake on the questions being asked so everyone would have a different answer which is helpful.
DeleteI think I could possibly go into a surgical team and do well. I could also go into nursing. I have thought about being a nurse in pediatric cancer unit. I could possibly be in group that manages a high government figure.
Delete1) I discovered that I would not be good at doing any job with public speaking. I would be good in a job that requires listening.
ReplyDelete2)My strengths would be working in groups and listening to people. My weaknesses would be speaking in front of large groups and pressure. Lots of pressure I feel would make it worse for me to do something.
3)Well I enjoy sports and I know how each sport effect different muscles differently so I could probably be an athletic trainer or a physical trainer. I also enjoy doing hair and make up so I could also become a beautician.
These are some great answers Marina! I like that you think about your strengths as a listener and are honest about how public speaking makes you uncomfortable. Not everyone is meant for public speaker, so don't feel like you're the only one!
DeleteThinking about possible careers, how could you use your "listening" skills as an athletic trainer?
I also am not very comfortable with talking in front of large groups but I am doing it more so that I can get used to doing it. I also like how you thought about things you would really enjoy doing.
DeleteAs an athletic trainer I could listen to them to see where they are having their pains and show them a few stretches or help them out by getting them crutches or an ambulance.
DeleteI liked how you thought about your hobbies: sports, hair, and make up to help you think of possible careers.
DeleteMarina, it sounds like you could also be a physical therapist! Have you looked into this field as an alternative to athletic trainer? They have quite a bit in common.
DeleteI discovered that as an applicant I am good at revealing what my interests are and what kind of a job fits my needs. For example, I answered that I like to work independently, this could narrow the amount of jobs that are right for me. Some of my biggest strengths are communicating, self-motivation, independent working, and meeting deadlines. Meanwhile my greatest weaknesses are listening (especially to some directions), working in a group, and taking a leadership role. The field that I'm best suited for in my opinion would be the social sciences because I enjoy that field and I enjoy learning about it.
ReplyDeleteTim, you are an *excellent* self-starter! Really, you are. I would make a note of the term, "self-started" and "meets deadlines well" as part of your application materials.
DeleteUsing your self-motivation as a guideline, what kinds of jobs do you think you could apply for that need self-motivated, independent candidates? Please brainstorm a list.
I think you would do well in social sciences. You are good at stating what you believe in.
DeleteI liked how you said what you were best suited for and that you enjoyed learning about it.
DeleteSome self-motivating jobs that I could apply for would include: a lifeguard, someone who works at a park, or maybe some sort of a counselor or teacher.
