AP English: Central Moral Action in William Shakespeare's Othello

Quote 1: "If any civilization is to survive, it is the morality of altruism that men have to reject." - Ayn Rand

Quote 2: "Aim above morality.  Be not simply good, be good for something." - Thoreau

Quote 3: "Morality is the herd-instinct in the individual." - Nietsche

Quote 4: "Reason and experience both forbid us to expect that...morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle." - George Washington

Instructions:
1) Pick the quote above that best reflects your point of view (POV).
2) Then, meet with other students who chose the same quote.  Create a defense for your definition of morality.
3) Pick a speaker and share your group's defense with the rest of the class.

  1. Quote 1: I agree that if nobody cared about eachother or had any morals, society wouldn't have a chance at surviving, so it's our job to "reject" the "morality of altruism", altruism meaning that they don't care about anyone but themselves.

  2. I chose quote 2 as the definition that best reflects my POV. I chose this quote because i believe morality is the base line of what is good. Being a moral person means sticking to the laws of what good is, I believe that any person can be better than just moral.

  3. Quote 2 best reflects my point of view. In life, it's more important to not worry about what's right or what's wrong, but instead, to always stay a good person. It's also best to be known for something, whether that's always staying positive or always brightening people's days, etc.

  4. I think that Quote 2 best reflects my point of view. Morality is something you should have, you should be good. However, you should also be good for something, whether it is doing more than you need to do for something to be right, or doing right for a specific purpose especially.

  5. I think I agree most with quote 2. In the dictionary, mortality can be defined one of two ways; it can be defined as, "the principles concerning the difference between right and wrong" or, it can simply be called "good behavior".
This would essentially mean we should try to be better than good. We shouldn't just be good to be good, we should be good for something, whether it's for a friend, family members, or just your everyday job.

  6. I choose quote #2 because Oxford English dictionary describes morality as the difference between right and wrong, also, good behavior. I believe that this definition best describes morality because it's saying to not just be good but make your "good behavior" mean something.

    1. I agree completely! This is what I was trying to get at in my comment, but I think you worded it better. :)

  7. I think quote 2 best reflects my POV because I believe it is saying that one shouldn't just live with values of right wrong, but to "aim" higher and find what it is you are really meant to do. Life is to short to not have purpose so keep pushing your comfort zone but with passion.

  8. I think the second quote best reflects with my point of view. Thoreau says, "Aim above morality. Be not simply good, be good for something." I think that being simply good is great, but if you aim to "be good" for something then you have a reason to be good. Without a reason for goodness, it would be easier to stray away from "being good" or nice and easier to be unpleasant or mean.

  9. Quote 2: "Aim above morality. Be not simply good, be good for something." - Thoreau

I chose this quote because for one, it makes the most sense to me, and two, this quote doesn't focus on morality, but rather takes it a step beyond. This quote identifies morality, the good and bad, but allows others to think beyond just plain good or bad. This quote makes me think think about individuals not just in a good/bad way, but rather are they helpful to others around them and non selfish.

  10. For this post I choose quotes # 3 because as an individual person you need to know what the principal of the good and the bad and the things your suppose to do.Or at least what you know you should do not because is always convenient but because it the right thing.

  11. Quote 2: "Aim above morality. Be not simply good, be good for something." - Thoreau

I know this quote reflects closely to my point of view because I feel as though I have a reason to have morality in my life. I am driven to keep that state of consciousness because I want to do it for a better future. I believe being good for something is a motivator and it holds a bigger reason, other than it simply being an act of righteousness.
