11/12 English Writing Warmup: "Ethos, Pathos, and Logos in Persuasion/Advertising/Writing"


Writing Warmup:
For today, watch the video, "Ethos, Pathos, and Logos in Persuasion/Advertising/Writing."  After each commercial pause and answer the following questions.

Commercial 1: What jobs/experience does Mr. Peterson tell the audience he has?

Commercial 2: What Makes Allstate a credible/trustworthy company for customers? What might be the emotion (pathos) to which the commercial appeals?

Commercial 3: How is an appeal to reason (logos) being used?

Commercial 4: Today we learn a new term, "logical fallacy," the belief that an idea is a good one simply because a large group of people believe that it is good.  What happens in this video? What makes Mr. Burns happy and why?

  10. Commercial 2: Allstate is credible because it has been a company for a very long time so people rely on it. The pathos is supposed to make people feel comfortable and safe but also sad because it was during the Great Depression.

  11. 2. Allstate is a credible or trustworthy company for customers because the commercial showed how people appreciated little things, like home cooked meals, after the Great Depression, which is when they started their company in 1931.
    The pathos could be sad at first, but then showing people that things could be better and you could be happier.

  14. Commercial 2: Allstate is a credible and trustworthy company for customers because they show how happy people are and the appreciation. "People started enjoying the small things in life." It also is a trustworthy company because they are in good hands which makes people want Allstate.
    The pathos of this commercial is the sadness in the beginning and then the comfort or happiness people are feeling because you "are in good hands" or safe.

  15. They are trying to prove their cars are safe by showing them crashing into other objects like walls buses and other cars.

  16. Logic is that they practice and experiment with crashes to improve the vehicle, making it a better car to buy.

  17. The logic of the video is that Volvo is making the best vehicles possible because they put them through hard tests to find out how to make them more safe.

    Logos- Their thought process was to convince the viewers that car crashes can be really dangerous, and there is no protection. They want a car that is safer and that isn't as unsafe for people to drive.

  25. In this commercial, Mr. Burns loses his money and everything. When he walks to the park, everyone is drinking coke and having fun. A guy gives Mr. Burns a coke and he drinks it and hangs out with them, which makes him happy.

  27. Commercial 4: Mr. Burns was a billionaire before he lost his house and money. He turns very sad and is walking through a park when someone sees him sad and gives him a coke. He then starts hanging out with all the people at the park and it makes him happy.

  29. Commercial 4: It starts off by Mr. Burns being sad because nothing is going his way. What makes him happy during the video is someone comes up to him and offers him a coke then someone else comes up and asks him to play football.

    Mr. Burns loses everything along with his money and is upset, and when he walked in the park everyone was happy. Then, someone gave him a coke and wanted to doing fun activities with him. The "logical fallacy" is that coke makes everyone happy.

    Commercial 2: All state is credible/trustworthy because they have been a company for a very long time, and the more a company is up and running, the more trust people will gain for that specific company. The pathos is supposed to make people feel secure and comfortable but also sad since it was during the Great Depression.

    Commercial 3: The logic behind this ad, is the fact that they are trying to show that the brand Volvo, is a good car by putting it through different crash courses to see how they can improve the safety of the car for future passengers.

    Commercial 4: Mr. Burns is very sad once he loses everything he's ever owned. He then ventures off to the park, everyone is happy. A man holding lots of Coke's offers him one and suddenly he is very happy and is involved with all the activities going on in the park. The "logical fallacy" is that coke makes everyone happy.
