AP English Writing Reflection: Disney's "The Paperman"

Writing Reflection:
This week, we've learned a lot about the power of Disney studios and how their unique style of animation has reshaped (and recreated!) the fairytales we've read this semester.

At the end of our last presentation, I would like for you all to watch "The Paperman," a 2012 black and white short film Disney produced.  While "The Paperman" isn't a fairytale, it is a story that tells the challenges and successes of one particular couple (think princes and princesses).  As you reflect on the video, think about how this short film is different from the Disney films we have watched and how the storyline is different from a traditional fairytale.

Please respond in the comments section below.

  1. A 2012 black and white short film Disney produced, "The Paperman," is much different than most Disney films and traditional fairytales. First, the film has little to no sound other than music. Meanwhile, all of the other Disney films our class has watched have involved talking. The storyline is also different, as it is told in the present besides in the far past like most traditional fairytales. Lastly, the short film was in black in white unlike any of the other Disney films we have watched.

  2. "The Paperman" is different than a traditional fairytale. It has somewhat of a different situation. The setting is in a city while most fairytales or movies are set up in a royal setting with castles, kingdoms, etc. It's in black and white, with only one little bit of color where the woman's lipstick left a stain on the man's paper. The black and white symbolizes the fact that the paperman is unhappy and possibly has a miserable or dull life, and the red colored lipstick stain on his paper symbolizes that the woman is the only light he sees, while in movies you see many vibrant colors that convey a magic and joyful tone. The only sound is from the music which sets the theme, and the wind which carries the paper airplanes, while in fairytales you see many talking and singing characters. Though there are many differences in the short, there are also similarities. For example, when all of the paper airplanes magically carried the man and the woman so they would find each other, the flying of the planes relate to multiple scenes of magic in various disney movies. A second example is that despite the fact that both the man and woman have other things happening in their lives, the main plot of the story was a that they would find love and end up being together, relating to a popular controversy over the stereotypical "damsel in distress" role that almost all disney princesses play, in which a prince would save them.

  3. The short film "Paperman" is a refreshing take that the audience will not often see from Disney like a black and white film. Also a story that focuses on something other than princesses. There wasn't almost any noise just soft sound effects in the background. This short film doesn't included the traditional princess and princes storyline disney most commonly uses. The storyline they chose is more relevant to the everyday person just meeting someone unexpectedly and possibly wanting to see them again (except I don't think people would do the paper airplane thing to someone). This isn't like cinderella, snow white or even Beauty and the beast that the girl ended up married to the boy an hour and forty-five minutes into the movie then they live happily ever after. There isn't any singing and dancing going on in the film. They show how everyday people aren't always happy go lucky and don't all have color in there lives therefore representing the black and white factor of the short film.

  4. The short film "The Paperman" is different from Disney fairytales because the storyline is about a man trying to interact with a woman, as opposed to a woman being in some sort of danger and being rescued by a prince. Also, the Disney fairytales are told through animation as well as vocalization, whereas "The Paperman" is told merely through the actions, and the mood is set through music.

  5. "The Paperman" a 2012 short film, does not follow your typical Disney storyline. This short film is unique because unlike most of Disney's famous work it is not a fairytale. For the most part, “The Paperman” could relate to the real world because there are no unrealistic features other than a little bit of magic, but hey would it really be Disney if it didn’t have any sort of magic? Another difference that makes this story unique is that it is almost all completely black and white accept for the kiss mark left by the paperman’s “princess” (or crush) which is not very common with newer Disney films. Last but not least, the fact that there was no talking at all, only sound effects and music is very significant because the story is still very clear to the reader.

  6. Just like any Disney fairy tale, fate is what brings two people together. It generally takes them until the end to find what they were looking for. Maybe, when they first met they never truly warmed up to the image of being together, but honestly.. We all know it's coming around one way or another. However, along the way of conflict, lessons are learned.

In the short film, "The Paperman," the young paper man found love at first sight. How they met was a laughable situation, an accident, really. His work papers are flying everywhere and one flew into her face, leaving a lipstick mark he never essentially could bear to get rid of ever since. They departed from that subway location and went on to continue their own lives in the city. Coincidentally, they become a road width away from each other. Even though his job was so strict, the paper man realized the love trumps his miserable life at the office. He tried to raise her attention by making paper airplanes out of his office papers and throwing it towards her open window. He failed even after using the paper with her lipstick mark. What's interesting is that the male character in this short film was more susceptible to vulnerability than the woman was. The woman was independent and left the man in the beginning, but the man felt as though he had to reach to her. He wasn't slaying a dragon guarding her tower; rather, he was simply going for what he thought would make him happy. Formulaically, this short film is just like any of Disney's animated fairytales. Differences include the silent acting in "The Paperman," emotions were expressed through the characters' facial expressions and music. None of our favorite princesses were singing about the "Colors of the Wind," because, well, there were no colors involved, except for the red lipstick mark on his paper. Yes, a little bit of magic was involved, but that is what truly sets apart a Disney film. The setting is based on real life, not enchanted forests and witches. It was relatable in our present world.

  7. The short Disney film "Paperman" is different from most of the typical fairytales they animate in many ways. One of the first and most obvious ways is that it is more modern than the fairytales we normally see. The story clearly takes place in a city much like New York City, but it's not so modern that there are computers yet. It also revolves around two young people (a businessman and woman) who fall in love at first sight. When the man sees the woman in the building across from him, he attempts to throw paper airplanes at her. Each time they fail, and he ends up missing her as she leaves. But by some 'miracle' the paper airplanes rise from the ground and guide the two back. Though technically it is 'magical', it's not something like a fairy godmother or a wicked curse, but just the strong connection of love.

  8. "The Paperman," a short film created by Disney, is different from archetypal fairy tales in the sense that the setting is very different. When we first think of fairy tales, we think of a pastoral setting, or even a world quite like our own but of course with an underlying perceptions of magic. Unlike "The Paperman" which is set in a modern city, not an enchanted forest or great midivil castle. The film itself is even colored back and white showing the films tone to be very sad and despairing as the main chapter struggles with attracting this woman to whom he's fallen in love with. Different from a classic fairy tale which one would suppose would be colored brightly and vibrantly giving the film a sense of life and even magic.

  9. The short Disney film "The Paperman" is very different from the average fairytale in several ways. The first major difference is the setting. The Paperman is set in a modern day city and has very few magical components. The second big difference is lack of spoken words, the entire short film only has small sounds such as grunts, and sighs. The third big difference is that the main antagonist is a modern day boss rather than some magical sorcerer or evil creature.

  10. "The Paperman" is different in many ways from the typical fairy tales. First of all, the two main characters are not royal in any way, but are rather regular, working people who find a way to be with each other. This story and fairytales also differ due to the setting. In fairytales, most take place from back in the day, but this film seems as though it has taken place in modern time. A Fairytale is usually thought of as magical, lighthearted, and happy with a sense of hope, with bright or pastoral colors to cover the setting. "The Paperman," however, is in black and white, which sets a sort of depressing tone for the story due to the man losing hope for the girl. Although, the music made up for the color. The music is different from both disney film versions because in a fairytale, the music is usually sang by a character. In the short film, the music sets the tone, playing at hopeful or determination filled parts, and no music at all, but silence, in the parts where the main character feels like he has lost hope.

  11. Disney's "The Paperman" is different from Disney fairytales for numerous reasons. One reason is where the story takes place. Not only in an urban setting, but it is very recent. Another reason was how there was no magic in the film, just coincidence. The typical fairy tale has lots of magical things within it and usually do not have lots of things happen on accident. The similarity that I see between "The Paperman," and fairytales is that they almost all end with true love.

  12. The Disney short, "The Paperman" is a silent black and white film. The only used color is the bright red kiss mark on the piece of paper, after he meets the girl he develops a crush on. The film also has some quiet music in the background to convey the characters feelings. The black and white was used to represent the main characters feeling before he meets this girl, who brings something new and exciting into his life. This short is different from the "normal" Disney fairytale, because of the lack of sound and magic. Characters usually sing to express their feelings, and in the short no words are spoken by the characters. Magic is normally used through out the fairytale, but in "The Paperman" the magic comes in at the end of the film to help bring them together.
