9/10 English: You Are the Heroes

Last week, we began our Freedom Writers narrative writing experience, looking back at the experiences of the students in Room 203 in Mrs. Gruwell's English class at Woodrow Wilson High School in Los Angeles.  One of the scenes that has always stood out to me is the moment in which Miep Gies, the woman who housed Anne Frank during World War II, tells the students: "You are the heroes."

Today, we will rewatch this powerful scene (along with the Anne Frank scenes before it). Then, we will answer the questions below.

1) Pick one or two similarities between the lives of the students in Mrs. G's classroom and Anne Frank. Explain how those experiences are similar (at least three sentences).
2) Think about the following quote from Miep Gies. What does she mean by "turn on a small light in a dark room?"

3) Think about Miep Gies's quote: "You are the heroes." How does she define hero?

  1. 1. A similarity between the lives of Anne frank and the students is that they are both hiding from someone or something who wants to hurt, kill, or capture them.
Another similarity between the two is that they are both around the same age.
Its almost like the students and Anne frank have some relatable moments.

    2. The quote means that something small can make a big change so the students can do something small and make a big change.

    3. She define hero by saying that they can do something that can help a lot of people.

    1. I strongly agree because, you give decent evidence such as saying how the lives of anne frank and the students are similar .

    2. I agree with the same age similarity, I think that's important too. I also put that they were both being threatened constantly by a "gang" of some sort.

    3. I agree because Anne Frank and the students did have to hide from someone that wants to hurt, kill, or capture them. It was very similar.

    4. I do agree but I feel that your answer to question three could be any amount of people not just a large group of people.

  2. The students and Anne frank have 1 thing in common and that is living every day not knowing if ur gonna die or not. And it aint easy being a different religion or color. Because you could get shot or mistreated any moment. I think the quote means that just one person could make a huge difference. What i think she means by you are the heroes is standing up for your self and making a change for whats best.

    1. I agree because you point that Anne frank and the students live a life of danger like they could get shot or die.

  3. One similarity between the lives of the student in Mrs. G's classroom and Anne Frank, is that they both lice in fear of being killed everyday. The students are afraid of Gangs and the police. Anne Frank was afraid of the Nazi's. Another similarity between the students and Anne Frank is they're both surrounded by a war that's affecting their education.
What I think Miep Gies meant when she said this quote is that you won't be able to change the world by yourself. But you can make a small change and a combination of small changes can lead to big changes, eventually leading to the room not being dark anymore. Miep Gies defines being a hero as just doing the right thing.

  4. 1. A major similarity between Anne Frank and the kids of Mrs. Gruwell's class is no matter what their lives are effected by conflict. Most all of the have lost someone they know that is close to them from conflict. It seemed that what they were capable of was restricted to what is outside of them.

    2. I think what Miep Gies means is that once a person puts their mind to something its very hard to say what a person is capable of. It doesn't matter who you are, or where your from. The only thing a person needs to get to their goals is determination.

    3. When she said you are the heroes she meant that the kids had inspired her. I think she defines heroes as a person that wants to make a difference in their life.

    2. I agree with your second answer, you can't say someone can't do something because you really don't know what they're capable of. This is similar to the movie because the teachers didn't believe the students in Mrs. G's class could read the books she was giving them, but they could and it changed the way they thought after
