English Essentials Writing Warmup: The Dude Project

Writing Warmup:
A big thank you to Joel for helping create this week's informational writing activity! We would not be thinking about audience, purpose, and meaning without you!!!

Writing Activity:
1) Pick your favorite YouTuber, send Dr. B the video, and she will create a writing prompt based on that video. Note: make sure YouTubers are *appropriate* for school! A lot of them use language or discuss topics that may not be school appropriate.

2) Essential questions: How does this YouTuber bring in and attract audience members? Who is their audience? What is their content about? Why do you watch their videos?

  1. First off, I have to say *thank you* to Joel for sharing this video! I don't have a lot of time to watch YouTubers, and I always feel like I'm out of the loop with what's cool or trending with students. Yesterday, I kid you not, I actually asked one of our sophomores, "what is dabbing?" AND, "What is a Nae-Nae?" So, I learned a lot about our student culture just from seeing this flipping video. I now know why every boy in my class after lunch "flips" their water bottles over and over and over until I am like, "WHY ARE YOU FLIPPING THAT?!"

  2. These YouTubers bring in audience members because what they do is cool. Their audience is probably younger males and females who like these kinds of videos. Their content is about cool trick shots and illusions. I don't watch their videos, because I find these kinds of videos fake and not entertaining, the whole flipping trend is over, and has been for a while.

    1. The YouTuber does really difficult things like flipping a ladder and flipping knives from 5 or so feet and having it land handle up and so much more! I would say their audience is young kids like 9 or so and up, and most likely males, cis and trans because they appreciate cool things. I watch their videos because I think they do some really awesome stuff.

    2. I disagree with you about the comment you made on how they do really awesome stuff, I don't think that the content they make is real or interesting.

  3. I think this YouTuber brings in male audience members because they think its cool, there might be some female audience members. I don't watch this YouTuber because I personally think that bottle "flipping" was cool in the beginning but now its old and boring.

    1. I think your observations about being "cool" are a huge part of why people stopped flipping bottles about a month ago. Why did this stop being cool?

    2. I think it stopped begin cool because people were doing it constantly and it was getting "annoying"

    3. Ah! So one of the things we discussed in class is how much time you have to spend practicing "flipping" in order to get it right. BUT, doing it so much can make it boring, right?

  4. In the 9th grade class the guys think bottle "flipping" is cool because you can flip anything and they think its pleasing.
