11/12 Writing Warmup: Ethos, Logos, and Pathos in the Presidential Debate (10/3/16)

Writing Warmup:
Watch the video on ethos, logos, and pathos and review these key terms.  Then, working in small groups, pick one example of ethos, logos, and pathos in Hillary Clinton's debate and Donald Trump's debate from the broadcast we watched last week.

For example,

Clinton: "I have a plan that will create ## jobs."
(ethos, because Clinton is telling us she has done her homework and has a plan to create jobs)

Clinton: "I have a feeling that by the end of this night, I'm going to be blamed for everything that has ever happened."
(logos and pathos because Clinton is pointing out something that is very true: Trump repeatedly blames her for things that she has no control over.  This comment is made funny by the fact that Trump takes himself so seriously and blurts out, "Why not?!" when she made this claim.)

9 comments:

  1. Trump: "I want to make america great again"
Ethos- Because he that is what trump wants to do if he becomes president.
Logos- Trump trys to persuade the audience with what he wants to change to make america great again.
Pathos- Trump trys gets people all wound up at Hillary to try to get them to like him.

  2. Trump: "I will completely support her"
The logos is that he is saying that if he loses then he will still support whatever her plans are as president.
The pathos is that it is supposed to be reassuring to you that regardless of the outcome he will deal with whatever happens.
The ethos is that when he says that he won't be too upset if he loses, he can go back to being a millionaire after the election is over.

  3. Trump:"We are going to bring jobs to america like Ronald Reagan"
ethos- Because Trump is well known so people are gonna listen to him.
    Logos-

  4. Trump: "We need to knock the hell out of isis"
(locos) People are scared of isis and trump being so assertive about what he wants to do makes people feel safe and trust him more.

  5. "You are going to see some very bad things happen." -Trump

Ethos: Even though what he says means no sense and sounds like a third grader, he has a point. Yes, Trump we will see some very bad things happen soon if you become president. But please be more specific and not use words such as "things". However, he is still credible because he is an authority who is running for president and he has a lot of Trump supporters.

Pathos: You feel almost as if you are listening to an elementary student talking. It would make more sense if he were more specific about the whole idea he was thinking.

Logos: He has a point but he needs to be more specific with what he is talking about. It has logic behind it.

  6. Trump: "we have to knock the hell out of ISIS."
pathos and ethos, because he wants people to feel safe and think that he can take down ISIS.

  7. Trump: "I want to make America great again."
Ethos because he is stating that he is going to make America good again if he becomes president.

    Trump: "Wrong... wrong...wrong..."
Logic: Trump thinks that when he said "wrong" to whatever Hillary was saying was logical, but in the audience's opinion, this really doesn't help him at all in the debate or doesn't state any facts.
Trump: "We have to have law and order. When we don't have it, we don't have a country."
This is an example of pathos because it makes people feel bad about our country just by what Trump said. He said that if we don't have law and order, then we may not have a country which could also seem scary to some of the audience.

  8. Trump: "Wrong, Wrong, Wrong."
Ethos or Logos because he is trying to tell the audience that what Hillary is saying is wrong. And by interrupting her and saying, "wrong" three times within 5 seconds, he obviously wants people to believe him.
