9/10 English: Writing Warmup: Theme, Theme, Theme

Bell Ringer Activity:
Yesterday, we watched D4Darius's video on theme (here). For today's bell ringer, re-watch D4Darius's video and answer the following questions on theme.

1) Describe the theme you have identified for your summer reading.
2) Give one example of this theme (with a page # and/or quote!).

  1. the theme that i think of for my book is that if you sit back and let things that shouldn't happen happen it will come back to haunt you. On page 74 the main character has been unable to sleep soundly due to his decisions.

  2. The theme for my summer reading is all about lobsters/lobstering. On pg.20 the Lobster Market Report starts and it's all about what's going on in the market today. It's about the prices of the lobbsters, how the season has gone, and about lobstering this year.

  4. My theme is that it is Ok To Be Mad. As Alice goes threw her adventure she realizes that not only are the creatures in Wonderland made but she is mad too. "'Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: 'we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad.' 'How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice. 'You must be,' said the Cat, 'or you wouldn't have come here.' (p 53).

  5. Mike: rangers apprentice is about being special no matter who you are and how you don't have to be a master at everything to be the leader of the tribe. And on page 96
"doesn't matter how strong you are you always can be a leader"

  6. The theme that I came up with was, growing up. Throughout the whole book Alice wants to growing up, she eats things that maker her grow and shrink. "What a curious feeling!" "I must be shooting up like a telescope!" said Alice after drinking the liquid in the bottle.

    1. Excellent theme Mitchell! It meets all of the characteristics we've been discussing. Please post a page number/quote so that you can support your theme and meet standard RL1, "I can use evidence to support my ideas." You've made a good start meeting RL2, "I can analyze theme."

  9. The theme I have identified for my book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass is you can be so immersed in a fantasy world in your head that it can feel like reality and impact your life. "So she sat on, with closed eyes, and half believed herself in Wonderland, though she knew she had but to open them again, and all would change into dull reality" (104) is saying how Alice sat with her eyes closed thinking of Wonderland again, even though she knew she had to open her eyes and go back into reality.

    1. Fantastic theme! Do you see this theme repeat through Through the Looking Glass? It's such a good theme, I think you can find more than one example.

  10. This summer I read The Hobbit. I identified the theme by how Bilbo Baggins changed as a character. At first Bilbo didn't fit in with the group and wasn't very useful. Then he found the ring and he used it to help the dwarves and it made him very useful. The theme is that if you don't think you are helpful, find something you are good at, you are always good at something. For example on page one hundred and forty seven the dwarves are captured by spiders. Bilbo puts on the ring and runs around taunting the spiders so he can help them escape.

  11. I think the theme for the article I chose would be that sometimes plans change. On page 10 issue 8/5/16 of "The Week", Usain Bolt says, "I was so in love with cricket, I didn't want to do anything else. Track was just something I was doing because I was good at it."

    1. Great theme! How does your quote support the idea that sometimes plans change? Since nothing actually changes in this quote, you'll need to spell out the connection you're making between the quote and the theme you have identified.

  12. The theme in Flags Of Our Fathers is about war efforts wether it's fighting or raising money. "I hope you can appreciate the profound admiration I have for you and your actions out in the Pacific. You ordinary guys, you heroes of Iwo Jima." page 202-203

  13. A theme that I found in my summer reading was, "to not be afraid of taking chances and making friends because in the end it will turn out ok." One example of friendships and everything going ok is when Bilbo says, "Farewell, Balin! And farewell Dwalin; and farewell Dori, Nori, Ori, Oin, Gloin,Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur! May your beards never grow thin! Farewell Thorin OKenshield! And Fili and Kili! May your memories never fade!"(pg. 266)

  14. I believe the theme of the lord of the rings is to complete the task you are given in the time you got.

an example are pages 268-269. The two hobbits Frodo and Sam are claiming on rocks and soon run in to Gollum.

  15. The theme I picked for Alice in Wonderland is fantasy can feel like reality. The quote I picked is "It's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then." I like this quote because I'm never the same person from day to day.

    1. Great example Justice! I like that you made a personal connection with Alice's feelings about being a different person each day. Can you find where this is in the book? Remember, you need to give an exact chapter/page number to show me you can use evidence to support your ideas. Good quote! I'm looking forward to seeing your video!

"He could feel that the propeller had stopped bitting, and steering was nonexistent, and in a sickening sideways movement, the Sea Fever broached. The boat was caught sideways, or "beam to," in the driving onslaught of the sea."(65)
