9/10 Writing Warmup: What Is the Meaning of "Dr.?"

Bell Ringer Activity:
In Friday's class (and much of last week), some of our new students wanted to know why my name starts with the acronym, "Dr." instead of "Ms." or "Mrs." I told them about my background and how I spent a long time working on a Doctor of Philosophy degree in English.  It's one of the most important things I've ever done, and I want all young people to know that education doesn't have to end with a four year degree!

To explain this concept, I call this my "German Shepherd Analogy." For today, follow along with the PowerPoint Presentation on German Shepherds. Then, answer the question below.

1) What idea does the "German Shepherd Analogy" explain and prove?
2) Look up a PhD in a field you're interested in studying--math, science, boat building (engineering), English, history, etc.  Post a link to that program

  1. The "German Shepard Analogy" is meant to show that there is more out there than we know. Just because we live on an island with limited things doesn't mean there isn't any else out there. Here is a school that focus's on the art of theatre. https://gradschool.cornell.edu/academics/fields-of-study/subject/theatre-arts/theatre-arts-phd-ithaca

  4. The German Shepherd Analogy explains and proves that you don't have to be an actual medical doctor to be called a doctor. You could be a doctor in pretty much any field you choose.

  6. The German Shepherd Analogy explained how just because you're used to one type of dog (or doctor) doesn't mean there can be different kinds of dogs (doctors) in the world. The two fields I have interest in is podiatry and eq physical therapy http://www.newenglandequine.com/New-England-Equine-Physical-Therapy.html

  9. There isn't just one type of dog just like there isn't one type of doctor. I could not find a "doctor" of a mechanic but a school would be...http://www.uti.edu/forms/form9?&mkwid=sOrU40lA7_dc&pcrid=98041575025&pkw=auto%20body%20schooling&pmt=b&utm_medium=sem_nonbrand_all_devices&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=CMP-01016-S2L0G5&utm_term=nonbrand-nonmobile&utm_content=google-Automotive-auto%20body%20schooling-98041575025-nonbrand-nonmobile&c3apimn=OrU40lA7&c3=98041575025#

  12. The "German Shepard Analogy" means that just because you are used to one type of dog, doesn't mean that there aren't other dogs. I am interested in studying anthropology in college http://www.bu.edu/anthrop/.
