Bell Ringer Activity:
In yesterday's class, we spent a lot of time discussing three classical appeals of rhetorical writing and speaking: ethos (an appeal to credibility/authority), logos (an appeal to logic/reasoning), and pathos (an appeal to the emotions).
Using Donald Trump's "Best Speech of the 2016 Campaign," list one example of
1) ethos,
2) logos, and
3) pathos.
Trumps quote "Louisiana, a state that is very special to me." is an example of pathos because it gives you a sense of emotion.
ReplyDelete"Last week, I laid out my plan to bring jobs back to our country" is logos because he is reasoning.
"I am fighting for those forgotten Americans." is ethos because Trump is taking credit.
The first quote is emotional because Louisiana is important to him and is going through a rough time.
DeleteThe second quote shows that Trumps knows what he is doing because he has a plan.
The third quote shows that trump is credible and people are going to listen because he is an important person.
Ethos- "But one thing I can promise you is this: I will always tell the truth." (3/11) This is a good example because people who support him, will believe him. He is also trying to get other people to believe him.
ReplyDeleteLogos- "I speak the truth for all of you, and for everyone in this country who doesn't have a voice.
I speak the truth on behalf of the factory worker who lost his or her job.
I speak the truth on behalf of the Veteran who has been denied the medical care they need.
I speak the truth on behalf of the family living near the border that deserves to be safe in their own country but is instead living with no security at all." (3/11) This is a good example because he uses "I speak the truth," four sentences in a row. This could also be a good example of ethos because he is trying to get people to believe him.
Pathos- "I've embraced the crying parents who've lost their children to violence spilling across our border. Parents like Laura Wilkerson and Michelle Root and Sabine Durden and Jamiel Shaw whose children were killed by illegal immigrants." (6/11) This is a good example of pathos because it is a sad topic, especially for the parents, and could easily get certain people emotional.
1) One example of ethos is when Donald Trump said, "But one thing I can promise is this: I will always tell you the truth" (3/11). This is a good example because what he said is believable, and some people may trust him.
ReplyDelete2) An example of logos is when he said, "Countless Americans have been forced into part-time jobs, premiums are about to jump by double digits yet again and just this week, ETNA announced it is pulling out of the exchanges all over but also in North Carolina" (9/11). This states facts on the Americans that have been forced into part-time jobs.
3) Finally, an example on pathos is in the beginning of the speech when he said, "I'd like to take a moment to talk about the heartbreak and devastation in Louisiana, a state that is very special to me" (1/11). This quote really brings out peoples emotions by stating the problem in Louisiana and then how it is very special to Donald Trump.

ReplyDeleteHe shows ethos by talking about how Louisiana is such an important place to him to make people think he cares. He shows logos by saying that we all need to come together to make this country better and that is logical because one person isn't going to make this country a better place it will take everyone. He shows pathos by having his reputation speak for itself, meaning his success must mean that he will be able to go forward with his plans and they will be good for the country.

ReplyDeleteLogos: "Look how badly things are going under decades of Democratic leadership. Look at the schools. Look at the poverty. Look at the 58 percent of young African-Americans not working. Fifty eight percent. It is it is time for a change. What do you have to lose by trying something new? I will fix it watch, I will fix it. We have nothing to lose. Nothing to lose. It is so bad. The inner cities are so bad, you have nothing to lose. They have been playing with you for 60,70,80 years, many, many decades. You have nothing to lose. I will do a great job." This quote is logos because it is giving facts, showing that there is a problem and Donald Trump is saying that he can help.
Pathos: "We are one nation. When one state hurts, we all hurt - and we must all work together to lift each other up. Working, building, restoring together." The quote is pathos because it makes people feel emotion, especially sadness.
