For my summer reading, I decided to read The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner, written by Stephenie Meyer. This novel is affiliated with the Twilight series, yet not fully apart of it. The book happens to tell a story about a young vampire named Bree Tanner, who was turned into a young and strong vampiric creature in order to fight for others. This character only played a part in the Twilight Saga: Eclipse movie for about five minutes, yet has a very extravagant hidden life. Throughout the book, Bree has been lied to by her leader multiple times, and found out some of those lies with her fellow friends, Diego and Fred. Bree decided to be an individual, and had a plan to set on her own path, yet did't go far. When she went to the battle to find Diego who was separated from her a few days ago, she found herself as the only one left alive of her group. The "yellow-eyes" caught her as she surrendered and told them any information they wanted to know (158). After, a group called the Volturi killed her for the action of the yellow eye's sparing her life and her breaking certain rules. I wish I could tell what these rules were, but this scene at the end of the novel happened to be unclear.
The moment when Bree found out that her master had truly been lying about everything was when she surrendered to the yellow-eyes, and one of them named Carlise approached her and calmly said, “We are only defending ourselves” (146). Bree being told this was a flash into reality for her. She figured out that she had been living in this huge lie about all she knew about her own kind and why she had been created.
I cannot personally connect this story to a personal real life situation, although I can agree with Bree for the decisions that she made. If I were Bree Tanner and found out about all the lies I were told that were meant to scare me from leaving, then I would have set on my own path as soon as I could. The only thing that I would have done differently is follow her other friend when she had the chance, and risk the romance by not finding her other friend, Diego.
Gilleyanne,
ReplyDeleteExcellent summary of the book by Stephanie Meyer! I thought your overview of the storyline was impressive (and interesting!). I especially like the way you described both of your quotes and used proper MLA formatting to include them in your writing. Excellent job!
