AP English Writing Warmup: Snow White (1937)

Bell Ringer Activity:
For today, you had to read the section on "Snow White" from our Norton Critical Editions.  Please watch the Snow White trailer (from 1937) and the opening scene to Once upon a Time and discuss how these versions of the "Snow White" story relate to readings you did for today.

  1. Both the Once Upon A Time and Disney versions of the classic Snow White tale relate to the readings mostly based on the essential plot and physical appearances. In all cases, Snow White ends up 'dead' and put into a casket by the dwarves that is never buried, but is later saved by her Prince Charming. The Snow Whites in all cases also share similar looks: snow white skin, black hair, and rosy cheeks, though the Disney version has short hair and the Once Upon A Time version has longer hair.

  2. These versions of the Snow White story are related to the reading because all the stories have the same basis. A beautiful person is targeted by an evil person who wishes to get rid of the beautiful person. And in each one there is a protagonist who sets out to destroy the evil person and save the beautiful one. Some versions of the story diverge from the regular format of living happily ever after, but for the most part these stories end with the hero and maiden living happily ever after, and the evil person perishing.

  3. These two stories relate to the "Snow White" story in the book because each have the main characters, Snow White, Prince Charming, the Dwarfs, and Snow White's stepmother. Also, in each story, Snow White is saved by Prince Charming. However, the two trailers show that a kiss has to be bestowed in order for her to awaken. In the book, Snow White chokes up the chunk of poisonous apple when she was dropped by Prince Charming's clumsy workers. Additionally, in Once Upon A Time, there is a wedding that is destroyed by the stepmother, but this event never happens in any of the other stories.

  4. Most of the classic fairy tales of "Snow White" had happy endings, where Snow White is revived by a comb falling out of her hair, or an apple being dislodged from her throat, or something along those lines. In both Once Upon a Time and Disney's version, Snow White is awakened by a kiss. In the opening scene of Once Upon a Time, it starts with a happy ending, but the evil queen goes to their wedding and tells them that her "real work" would begin. The stories are all quite similar except for these endings, which only have slight variations.

  5. The two videos we watched today in class relate greatly to Brothers Grimm's Snow White. For example, in the original trailer for Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, the evil queen looks into the mirror and asks "who is the fairest of them all." Also, in the same trailer, we see the queen feed Snow White the poisoned apple, along with her dressing up as an old hag to trick her. In Once Upon a Time, the prince arrives to Snow White's glass coffin and kisses her--thus bringing her back to life. The same thing happened in Brothers Grimm's retelling.

  6. Both the Snow White trailer we watched and Once upon a Time were similar to the readings we did for today. In each, Snow White "dies" from eating an apple. She is then put in a glass casket. Also, in every story, she eventually wakes up. However, in Once upon a Time, she wakes up from the prince kissing her. In the readings, she wakes up from the prince dropping her casket.

  7. Each version of Snow White follows a similar plot, but there are different similarities for each. The Snow White trailer and the opening scene to Once upon a Time both bring Snow White back to life by the prince, when he kisses her, but in many of the readings, the way she came back to life is by the poisoned apple the she ate getting lodged out of her throat when the dwarfs are moving her for the prince. However, the Once upon a Time version differs from the trailer and book, because though Snow White was brought back to life, the Queen arrived at the wedding and set a spell, so basically, the queen didn't get her victory in the trailer and readings, but did, in the Once upon a Time series.

  9. The videos we watched related mostly to the Brothers Grimm version of Snow White. The seven dwarfs are in the Brothers Grimm version, just like the movie. The stepmother still plans to kill Snow White, so she can be the fairest of them all, and her methods in the book are similar to the movie. In the movie she doesn't ask to eat her organs and just wants her dead. Of course the Prince saves Snow White from her death. The evil step mother goes to their wedding in this story, but instead of putting another curse on her like she did in Once Upon A Time, they make her dance in hot iron shoes until she dies.

  10. The two videos we just watched showed a lot of similarity to the original Snow White by Brothers Grimm. The trailer for the disney version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs show the angry queen trying to poison Snow White at the dwarfs cottage. However, I haven't seen the movie, but it looked like the apple was the only way the queen attempted to kill her. In Once Upon a Time, it starts with the prince finding Snow White thought to be dead but when he kisses her, she wakes up and they both get married, just like in the book.

  11. The two clips that we watched today are very similar to the stories we read over the weekend. In both the clip and the book of course the main character Snow White is the fairest of them all. Then there is the evil stepmother who has let age get up to speed with her and is now not the fairest of them all.In both he clips and the book the dwarfs are there. In the clip Prince charming and Snow White aren't living happily ever after yet.The Kiss like always brings Snow White back to life/wakes her up.The poison apple puts her to sleep making her look dead. The once upon a time version they have the stepmother make a spell which doesn't happen in other versions.

  12. All versions of Snow White follow a similar plot. Snow White is a beautiful innocent girl who is targeted throughout the story by her evil stepmother who has all intentions to kill her. In "Once Upon A Time" Snow White seems to be really brave by threatening the evil queen with a sword at the wedding. Snow White's stepmother finally killed her and the seven dwarves put her in a glass casket. The prince then took her away and they found a way to make the stepmother vanish in the Brother's Grimm version and in the movie version.

  13. Both trailers relate to the "Snow White" readings because the plots are all very similar. Most could be shortly summarized by describing the Evil Queen who finds out through her mirror on the wall that she is no longer the fairest of them all but Snow White is. In envy she tries to curse Snow White but Prince Charming comes to kiss Snow White and save the day. Then the fairytale ends happily ever after... for the "Snow White" version (from 1937) but Once Upon a Time is much more complicated than that.
