AP English: Scoring Derek Walcott's "XIV" Student Essays

Bell Ringer Activity:
For today's class, you read three AP English essays on Derek Walcott's poem, "XIV," from the 2015 student essay pool.  I told you Tuesday that "one was a high example, one was a low example, and one was a medium example."

In the comments section below, tell us what score you gave each essay and why.  Since our class time is limited, you don't need to describe everything about the essay, just the big things you think the student did right using the scoring rubric I gave you yesterday.

[ Note: I have posted a picture of a constellation above to illustrate the big message I want you to learn about the College Board's policy for scoring AP essays: as a writer, you will be rewarded for what you do right on a whole, not every little thing you did wrong. ]

  1. I gave essay 1A an eight due to the multiple different interpretations of the poem that this essay offers. Each explanation is also very intricate and plays close attention to small details. I gave essay 1B a six because it was well written an acknowledged many of the different themes but did not elaborate on them as much as the previous essay. I gave essay 1C a five because it discussed some of the main themes and tones of the poem but did not go into much detail.

  2. I gave 1A a score of 7. This essay was successful with describing the speaker's recollection. However, it lacked a clear analysis of poetic devices. I gave 1B a score of 9. I think this essay was well written and included everything that was needed, as well as including many direct quotes from the poem. Lastly, I gave 1C a score of 4. This essay lacked detail and didn't include any quotes from the poem.

  3. Essay 1A: This essay provides a deep analysis of the words and phrases Walcott uses to convey the significance of the boy's journey and helps to explain the wonder of his surroundings. Overall, I give this essay a 5

Essay 1B: The second essay explains in great detail how the use of Walcott's descriptions and phrases convey different moods, and provides examples of the feelings one has when reading this poem. This essay gets an 8.

Essay 1C: The final essay provides some detail of why Walcott's surroundings provide a memorable experience, and providing some interesting ideas as to how the village more than the forest plays some significance in his memory. Essay 1C gets a 2.

  4. On the first review of the poem, 1A, I gave this paper a high score of a 9. This sudden clearly discussed a reasonable analysis. This student expressed ideas clearly and made some reference to the text with explicit detail and understanding.

I felt that review 1B deserved a score of a 6 through the students clear analysis and thoughts, however the student mainly focused on discussing what happened in the poem (the step of paraphrase) rather than their own thoughts or significance to other meanings that the poem may have.

I gave the last review, 1C, a 4. I felt this score was reasonable for the amount of detail and thought put into this review. This writer did not refer to the poem much, if not then at all, and the writer also did not put a lot of their own thoughts and ideas into their response.

  5. 1A-I gave this person a 5 because they do a good job using "plausible analysis of Walcott's use of poetic devices," but come up empty handed Discussing their thoughts.
1-B-I scored this person an 8 because they use "a persuasive analysis of poetic devices to convey the significance of the experience." They are also very good at using strong vocabulary and adjectives.
1-C- I gave this person a 2 because they have good points, but fail to followthrough with them. There is "little clarity" with his thoughts and not very much discussion of the poem I feel.

  6. I gave 1A a 6-7 score (the medium score) because I think they made a good analysis, they wrote that they think Walcott is describing an experience or adventure he had visiting a woman story teller with his twin, but it was somewhat hard to understand in the body paragraphs.
I gave the 1B a 8-9 score (the high score) because they had a really organized analysis and explained how Walcott used his poetic devices to help the reader understand and feel his experience as they read the poem.
I gave the 1C a 4-3 score (the low score) because they wrote what they thought it was about but It doesn't seem like they really thought about it because they didn't have enough information to give an adequate analysis.

  7. 1A- I scored this paper as a 6. I thought they did a good job using textual evidence from the book, but they could have used more. They did a good job at finding the poetic devices in this poem.
1B- This one was the best out of the three. I scored this one with an 8, because they used textual evidence through out the entire paper, and was able to get the point across very well. They also did a really good job identifying the poetic devices, used in this poem.
1C- I gave this paper a 5. It met some of the requirements, but it didn't give the best examples of how the evidence related to his ideas. I think if they had gone more in depth on the information taken from the poem it would have been a better paper.

  8. I gave essay 1A a score of 5. I believe the writer made an acceptable discussion of Walcott's recollection and analyzed his use of poetic devices to display the significance of the event. I think that the writer did an overall acceptable job on the essay.
Essay 1B deserved a 7 I believe, because the writer had a good discussion of Walcott's recollection and a reasonable analysis of the use of poetic devices. The writer understood the poem and offered a well-written essay .
I gave Essay 1C a 4, as the writer did not offer a very persuasive essay concerning the recollection and analysis of the poem.

  11. I scored essay 1A a 7-6 because they definitely offered many quotes from the poem, itself, but also went into reasonable discussion about so. However, I believed that they didn't go into enough detail in their analysis.

For essay 1B, I gave a score of 9-8 because their poem analysts and discussion was throughout and precise. Plus, I believed that they correctly quoted the poem, if that means anything? Overall, the essay was exceptionally persuasive in their ideas.

Essay 1C got a score of 5 because even though their poem analysis was plausible, generally, their ideas were pretty trivial. I think they could have gone into more detail and added more ideas.

  12. I graded essay 1A with an 8-9, not only because of the descriptive language and key vocabulary, but they're ability to stay on topic throughout the text. From start to finish he focuses on both the perspective of the narrator AND the perspective of the viewer. The writer targets Walcott's specific literary devices, with little errors shown.

Essay 1B was mediocre, but not the worst, with a score of 6. Many errors are shown from the start, the writer jumps from one topic to another with no transition, but still includes key terms such as "personification" and "imagery". He also uses many direct quotes from the poem to back up his claims.

Essay 1C was the low of the bunch, with a score of 3, struggling to stay on topic, shortened down to less than a page and a half. Writer misuses words such as "intentionally", and uses amateur terminology.

  13. I scored essay 1A a 4 because the writer doesn't really understand the meaning as a whole. The writer only speaks primarily of the adventure the boy in the poem is having, I do not see deep analytic thought.

I scored essay 1B because the writer's rhetorical analysis is very reasonable. The writer uses many rhetorical terms and explains them well. The writer also connects the poem to life very well.

I scored 1C a 2 because the writer did not provide enough evidence. The writer did not dig deep enough

  14. For essay 1-A I gave the student at 6-7(7) the student went into depth about what Walcott was trying to come across in his poem.the student uses good words to describe what they are thinking.

For Essay 1-B i gave the student a 9-8 because this student gave really good examples of what Walcott was saying in his poem and the student mentions that walcott was using like Personification simile's ect. Also goes into depth about the lady and the boys.

For student 1-c i gave the student a 4 he doesn't use too many examples and goes into something completely different than

    not done
